Howard Township officials notified residents connected to the City of Niles sewer system in the past about items being flushed down toilets and other drains that are causing problems. It’s a message worth repeating.
Additional expenses are being incurred to clean out the lift stations due to blockage in the sewer lines. Residents are reminded to use a sink strainer– a type of perforated metal sieve or mesh strainer used to strain or filter out solid debris in the water system in all drains.
Even if the packaging says the item is biodegradable, the following items are not biodegradable and should not be flushed down the toilet:
Baby wipes
Wet wipes
Disinfection wipes
Tampons and applicators
Rags
Paper towels
And anything else except toilet paper
There have been mop heads found in the lift stations and other items causing the lift station to malfunction, thus becoming an added expense.
Residents, who have sump pumps for downspouts drains and/or foundation drains for rain water, should not connect to city sewer lines.
