Jim Donahoe with Aquatic Weed Control was our guest. Jim handed out a plant reference chart from Midwest Aquatic Plant Management Society. Aquatic Weed Control has been treating the lake with a chemical that can kill the Eurasian Milfoil 810’ down. It kills the plant but not the roots. Jim introduced a new chemical called ProcellaCOR made by SePRO, which will kill the roots. Jim recommended a two-tier program:
2019-apply ProcellaCOR first week of June and apply Diquat the third week of June. Cost $25,000. Spring-2020 – Complete a survey of the weeds in spring of 2020. Cost $1,750.
Milffoil removal will create open spots for native weeds to fill in. Lake usage restrictions:
Diquat – 24-hour swimming restriction, irrigation three-day restriction
ProcellaCOR – no swimming restriction, irrigation 710-day restriction
ProcellaCOR and Diquat have been used together. Spot treatment would be covered by manufacturer guarantee. Currently DEQ does not require a permit to use ProcellaCOR, new product since July 6. DEQ hinted that they would be interested in pre-application and post-application weed locations. Standard permit vs nonstandard permit.
Treatment Options:
Treat one third of lake in 2019, treat one third of lake in 2020, and treat one third of lake in 2021 = $50,000/3 years
2019 Treat the whole lake with ProcellaCOR and Diquat $25,000
2020 Perform survey $1,750
2021 Do we need ProcellaCOR treatment in 2021? Cost is $16,000.
Worst case scenario $25,000/yr or $150/property owner/year.
Eurasian Milfoil and Common Reed (phragmites) have been determined to be invasive species on Barron Lake. The Common Reed needs to be eliminated, or it will fill in the shoreline.
MUCK – Microbes are naturally occurring. If they are not labeled you can grow them in your garage but that’s not been tested. Must look at the data make sure you get the right kind of microbe private label. Aeration is needed to have microbes work.
Dredging would cost $1.25/sq ft. An acre contains 43,560 sq ft x $1.25 = $54,450/acre. Barron
Lake is 210 Acres. Identify areas with muck – muck disappears with oxygen and enzymes four times faster. Is it practical to get individual muck removal? Getting a permit may be an issue – Permit cost would be a la carte. It was suggested that we have Jim Slott, an Indian Lake resident, come to the September meeting. It was then decided that we would not ask Jim to speak to us.
Motion made: Ask township to give us ability to charge up to $150/year/resident for the next five years. Not to exceed $750 over five years. This would become effective in 2019. This is a $50 increase from what we are currently paying. Motion seconded. Motion carried. Bruno will attend the township meeting on Tuesday.
Poaching – Walleye limit is 5/day and 15” length. Lee Lawson said that there is a non-lake resident who fishes at night and is harvesting above the legal limit of fish. It was suggested she call the DNR, or local Conservation officer and make a report.
Cass County Fair – Pat Kelley thanked the people who worked the fair.
Lake Level Comments: We now have a full year of data and it was determined the lake is not getting recirculation – Clay areas on the lake are not at the pump location. Pumping 900 GPM. Aquifer Performance Test – Spend $50,000 to $60,000 on submersible pump. Would use both pumps if necessary. 8” well with two-phase electric – submersible. Well was turned on Aug. 3. Lake lost ¼” in last two weeks with evaporation and rainfall. Marker was 756’ as of today.
The boulder needs to be marked – Anyone willing to do this?

It was suggested we look into opening a Fidelity account and have a money market account for our checking account.
